Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is vital to maintaining good oral health. Your smile is a symbol of who you are, yet it is still regarded in some employment sectors as an elective instead of a necessary element to overall good health. For those of us not fortunate enough to have dental insurance we must look for our own. We will go over the three types of insurance that are available.
Three Types of Dental Insurance
Family Dental Insurance
Family dental insurance covers the entire family. That means that your spouse and children are covered under the same plan as you. Family discounts will save you money overall. Most dental plans will cover cleanings, x-ray's and other preventive measures on a timely basis. When deciding on the dental insurance that you want, you will want to ask what deductibles you will be paying as well as the out of pocket and co-pay. Some plans may require you to pay up front and become reimbursed later. Ask if there is a waiting period before you can have any major work done, such as crowning or root canals. Some plans require that you wait up to a year before they pay for any major work and some still only pay a small percentage of the bill.
Individual plan
An individual plan means just that, you will be the only one covered even if you have a spouse and children. You still need to check with more than one dental insurance plan to find the one that is right for you. Co-pay and out of pocket expenses may still apply. If you have major work that you know you are going to need done then you really need to investigate what plan is right for you.
Group Plan
A group plan is a dental package that is set up by your employer. Although these will generally be the best rates that you can find, you will still want to check and make sure that they are going to benefit you. Dental insurance can be basic coverage or premium depending on what your employer has set up. Again, make sure that you know when you are allowed to get any major work done and how much of a co-pay that you may have as well as any deductibles.
There are a lot of independent dental insurance plans out there and if you have any major work done, you will want to know all the options that you have. Co-pay and deductibles are an important factor in choosing which dental insurance plan you go with. If you are married then the family dental plan will save you money over doing the individual plans. Verify that these dental insurance plans have someone that you can contact with any questions and that they are a member of the American Dental Association (ADA). Preventive care will help you maintain that smile, dental insurance is a part of that.
